This course will scientifically describe the process of epigenetics. We will explain what “junk genes” mean and how those genes may become activated, based on experiences and adaptions to the environment. The concept and process of intergenerational trauma is defined and will reveal the links between how trauma and genetics can slow or prevent the transmission of trauma from one generation to the next. We will also explore mass trauma and discover how this impacts entire populations. Most importantly, the course will identify protective factors and how positive influences can reduce risk and vulnerabilities, including the concept of “Resilience transforms trauma into triumph”. We will also define resilience and explore a process developed early in life, not a skill acquired in adulthood, of actionable strategies to use epigenetic theory to understand and promote resilience.

This course introduces learners to a broad overview of generational differences. We will define the archetypes for each generation and explain the influences that impact how communication and perspectives differ from one generation to the next. Working together requires awareness of differences and strategies for living and working together. The workforce is an 80-year transitional cycle and so now, more than ever, we need to appreciate the distinctions of each generation. Millennials are moving into a more prominent position than ever before and the generations that follow will create changes in society that we never expected but will come to value and appreciate if we realize the reasons behind the changes.

The Implicit Bias course meets different industry requirements for registration and/or maintaining licensure in many states. This course discusses the definition of implicit bias, how to avoid the bias trap, and how to recognize personal biases and begin a process of self-reflection to facilitate growth and change. Evidence-based implicit bias training by subject matter experts increases the likelihood that unconscious bias will be brought to awareness in a non-judgmental approach. We all have biases, and together, we can learn, support, and recognize ways to disrupt the automatic thought process. Each specialization will examine bias traps within a particular industry and how to avoid and mitigate to avoid the negative consequences that follow.
